Important Events and Info for February/March

Grade 4/5 has been a busy classroom as we prepare for student-led conferences and second term report cards.  Your children have been working hard to finish up projects and assignments, which they are eager to share with you during their conference.

This term each student is also in charge of writing their own personal reflection document, which has allowed them to think deeply about their own learning, goals, and growth.  These documents will become an important part of each student's report card.

Here are some important dates and events that are coming up in the next few weeks:

Wednesday, Feb. 22nd - Anti-bullying Day
- Students must wear their uniform bottoms, but can wear a pink shirt to school
- Public Speaking Assembly - 2:00 pm in the gym - Congratulations to Jeremy, who will be sharing a Bible Reading at the assembly, and Reese, who will be presenting her poem.

Thursday, Feb. 23rd - Student Led Conferences - 3:30-7:00 pm (Students should wear their uniform to their conference.)

Friday, Feb. 24th - No school - Student Led Conferences from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon (Students should wear their uniform to their conference.)

FSA Test Info for Grade 4 Parents

Between the dates of Tuesday, January 24th & Friday, February 3rd the Grade Four students will be writing the FSA (Foundation Skills Assessment).  This is an annual province-wide assessment of British Columbia students’ academic skills, written in grade four and seven.  Over these weeks we will be completing six test sections, two on reading comprehension, two on writing, and two on problem solving in mathematics.  It is important to note the FSA is just a snapshot of where your child is now in their learning.  The outcome of the FSA tests will in no way affect your child’s report card mark.  Results of the FSA test are sent home with your child once all marks are received.  This usually occurs following the second term report card.

In preparation for the FSA test, it is important that your child be well-rested and ready to work.  A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast would be beneficial to your child and enable them to perform to the best of their abilities.

If possible, it is best your child does not miss any days during these weeks, to avoid having to catch up on several sections in a short amount of time. Of course, if illness does occur, your child will need to complete the online portion before the deadline of February 17th.  After this date we will no longer be able to access the online sections of the FSA.

Please help your child be aware that there is no need to worry about the writing of the FSA test.  Encourage them to do their best, and remind them that they should simply show what they know and be proud of their work.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail.

A Call for Christmas Bazaar Jars

We are all very excited that our parish bazaar is coming up in less than two weeks!

One of the favorite games at the bazaar is the Jar Game. All students are

encouraged to fill a jar with candy, treats, stickers, toys, etc., decorate it and

return it to school. At the bazaar, the children will then be able to win these

jars. The class that brings in the most jars will win a pizza party!!!

All jars will need to be dropped off in the classrooms by Friday, Nov. 25th .

Thank you!

Spelling Program and Other Important Info

We have been busy this week in Grade 4/5!  New schedules to get used to, lots of creative activities with the Grade 5 class, exciting projects getting under way, and so much more!

One of the many new things you will see your child bringing home this year is our new spelling program.  Words Their Way allows for a more personalized program for each student.  First, teachers assess each student to determine their understanding of spelling so far.  Based on this assessment, students are given a list of words with specific patterns to study that will build on their current understanding of word structure.  There are a variety of activities that are completed in class to gain an understanding of the word patterns each week, such as sorting the list of words into letter pattern categories and writing these list words out on lined paper in the correct categories.  Students are also given increased choice in this spelling program.  They choose two spelling activity pages that they will complete using their list words, which are due the following Thursday.

The criteria and deadlines of our new spelling program were discussed with students in class on Friday.  They received their spelling words, which they then sorted into the appropriate categories and wrote on lined paper in their duotangs.  Their words for sorting are located in the envelope glued inside the front cover of their Spelling duotang.  An information sheet with the steps to follow, work to complete, and deadlines to be prepared for will be added to student Spelling duotangs on Monday.  I have also uploaded this infomation page for parents to access on the Grade 4/5 Blog.  It is located in the lefthand sidebar near the top of the page.

If, after reading this information sheet, you have any further questions regarding the Words Their Way spelling program, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

Lastly, I quickly wanted to highlight a couple important dates to add to your calendar.

* Monday, September 19th - Photo Day! Please send your child to school in full uniform.  Students brought home a form to fill out and return for Photo Day.  Please send these along with them on Monday.

* Tuesday, September 20th - Terry Fox Walk - We will be having an assembly at 2:30, followed by our Terry Fox walk.  Students are asked to bring a "Toonie for Terry", but can certainly donate more, as well.

* Wednesday, September 21st - Fall Non-Uniform Day - More information will be sent home next week regarding the theme.

* Friday, September 23rd - Grade 4/5 Mass - The Grade 4/5 class will be leading the Mass this Friday.  Mass parts will be sent home early in the week to practice at home.

Looks like another busy week coming up!  I have had a wonderful first couple weeks getting to know your children.  They have been working hard and are excited about the great projects we have begun.

Have a wonderful weekend!

New School Year

Welcome back!

Just a few updates and important pieces of information to start the school year.

Students have been asked to bring a new kleenex box to school for our classroom supply.  This can be sent with them any day this week.

On Thursday, September 8th we will be having our Back to School BBQ and Meet the Staff event.
This will begin in the gym at 5:30 with a meeting and information on the new school year.  Following the meeting we will be enjoying a free BBQ out in front of the school.  At 7:00 the first information session in your child's classroom will begin, followed by a repeat session at 7:15 for all who missed the first one.  An information package about Grade 4/5 (timetable, PE schedule, homework policy, etc.) will be handed out at these sessions.  If you are unable to attend the sessions, the information package will be sent home with your child on Friday.  I look forward to seeing you all there!
